Shield is the combat skill to use a Shield, to fend off enemy attacks. Human, Vampire and Genie Explorers may start the game with basic knowledge of this skill. Player characters of most classes can (eventually) learn it, with the exception of the elemental-magic specialists.
The shield skill directly improves a character's Armour Class while a shield is employed. Expert and master ranking in the shield eliminate the recovery penalty and increase this defensive bonus. A grandmaster gains the ability to make a shield-bash attack that does damage equal to two times the shield skill.

Mastery of the skill influences its effectiveness. The various effects are cumulative.
