Identify Monster is the miscellaneous skill to identify unknown monsters and their qualities. Troll, Human, Vampire and Genie Students may begin the game with basic knowledge of this skill. Player characters of most classes can (eventually) learn it, with the exception of the cunning-oriented fighters.

Description

The Identify Monster skill is applied when a monster is examined. If the skill rank of the character is high enough for the monster in question it is identified and its strengths and weaknesses become known. Grandmasters always succeed. Identifying a monster increases the effectiveness of certain generic spells and enchantments.

Technical notes

  • Every monster has an identification value, ranging from 0 (default: always identified) to 50, which must be met to identify it.
  • The best monster identifier among the conscious party members makes the attempt.
