A weapon is an item that can be equipped by a player character. Non-player characters and monsters may carry weapons as well; some of these may become available to the party. A weapon is used to deal damage to an opponent in combat. There are numerous types and subtypes of weapons. While some weapons are wielded in melee fights and have limited reach, other weapons are used from a distance in ranged combat. Switching from melee weapon(s) to ranged weapons is automatic.

Depending on their (sub)type and a character's mastery of the relevant skill, a weapon can be carried with two hands, right-handed or with either hand. Therefore, in some cases it is possible for a character to have two melee weapons readied at the same time.

Musical instruments, to play battle tunes, are also considered a type of weapon.

A player character that holds no melee weapon or magic wand, will fall back to using their fist(s) during melee combat. With a high skill in Unarmed combat, this can be quite effective.

The effectiveness of a weapons can be increased with enchantments and with proficiency in the armsmaster skill.
