A potion is a drink with magical powers. It is mixed from various reagents, where a reagent can either be an ingredient or a catalyst, and kept in a potion bottle. Potion types range from simple potions, made from a single ingredient, to potions that can only be mixed with sufficient knowledge of the Alchemy skill. Recipes can be found that list the ingredients needed for a complicated potion. Any mistakes or lack of skill usually results in an explosion.
Potions can also be bought at an Apothecary and more occasionally at a Magic Shop or even a General Store, and can be found as treasure or loot.
All potions have size 1x2 in the inventory of a player character. A character can only drink from a bottle once, and drinking deletes the bottle.
Mixing potions
The mixing of potions is performed inside the inventory of a player character.
Any player character can safely put a reagent into an empty bottle and thus create a catalyst or a simple potion. To mix two existing potions into one more complicated potion, however, requires knowledge and skill. Firstly, not all combinations result in a stable outcome. There are many formulae that do not work and will cause an explosion, which can hurt the party as well as damage their property. It is therefore wise to be careful and to look for recipes rather than to just go for it. But secondly, even with the correct formula mixing two potions will still fail if the player character has insufficient expertise in Alchemy.
When a working mix is discovered, it will automatically be logged into the autonotes.
Power
Each potion has a power. The power of a simple potion depends on the quality of the reagent and the skill level in Alchemy of the character that mixes it. When two potions of different power are mixed, the power of the mix is the average of these potions' powers, rounding down. Mixing a catalyst with a potion gives the potion the power of the catalyst, even if that is lower than the original power of the potion.
The power of a potion can affect the strength or duration of its effect. Some potions, however, have the same effect regardless of power.
