A shop is a building where the party can buy items and some other things of value. Oftentimes, the party can also sell items that they don't need anymore, get unknown items identified and broken items repaired.

There are many different types of shops in Karigor, from weapon and magic shops to guilds and stables.

Opening hours

Shops will typically only be open during part of the day, for instance from 08:00 to 20:00. In a few regions shops are open at night.

Shop level

Not all shops sell the same quality of goods. For instance, top-level spellbooks are available at Prime Guilds but not at the simple guild on the starting map. Armour Shops and various others come in three levels, although they may specialize in one type of items (shields, for instance) and sell higher quality items of those. These shops normally also have several shelves: some with common goods in their quality range, and some with special stuff that e.g. holds enchanted items.

Prices

Prices depend on the value of an item and on the profit the shopkeeper wants to make. Profit margins vary, so if money is scarce it may be wise to do business in shops that offer the best deals. The party's Merchant skill and their local reputation can make a lot of difference. An item's value can be significantly increased by enchanting it, while broken items hardly have any value left.

Identification and repairs

At the right shop, unknown items can be identified and broken items repaired, for a price. To repair a broken sword, one should visit a Weapon Shop, etc.

Restocking

Shops that sell items restock at regular intervals, usually common items faster than special items. Shelves may also get refilled from the shop's own storeroom. Items sold by the party are not offered for sale.

Alternatives

Some non-player characters can repair and identify items or heal a player character. A few will even accompany the party as a hireling. If the player characters develop certain skills or learn certain spells, they will eventually be able to take care of these things themselves, and on occasion even their own transportation. A few NPC's are traders. Items and gold can be acquired in many other places than shops, for instance as loot or treasure. Nonetheless, shopping will always remain an important aspect of the game.
