A non-player character or NPC is a citizen, and a character that is controlled by the game, not by the player. Some non-player characters may temporarily join the player's party as the game progresses, either as a hireling or because they are involved in a quest as a quest character. Non-player characters will usually be able to conduct a dialogue with the player characters. With a few exceptions, NPCs do not fight and cannot be attacked.

Location

Most non-player characters can be found in or near their home, which can be a house, a shop or another dwelling. They are not always at home, but may wander about in the vicinity; only a few have the ability to travel to other maps. Some NPCs can be found in the wilderness, in dungeons or in even stranger places.

Roles

NPCs can have one or more roles. Leaders especially may combine several roles, and tend to have longer dialogues. Many NPCs have some useful information to reveal. It is generally advisable to talk with NPCs, and often more than once. Common NPC roles are:

Role Description
Captain Offers transportation over water.
Crafter Can make items from raw material, specifically ore.
Guildmaster Teaches player characters new skills, and may sell spellbooks.
Healer Usually residing in a temple. Can heal or cure player characters.
Hireling Will accompany the party for a fee, to enhance or add to the party's skills.
Promotor Promotes player characters to a higher class, or grants a racial title.
Quest character Accompanies the party during a quest or as part of the storyline.
Questgiver Offers a quest, and will usually reward the party for its completion.
Ruler May need to be asked for permission to enter certain locations.
Shopkeeper Sells, identifies, repairs and buys items.
Tavernkeep Offers lodging, food, drink and gossip.
Teacher Teaches player characters expertise and (grand)mastery in their skills.
Trader Will sell a specific rare item, and buy another.
Trainer Will train player characters, or the entire party, to a higher level.
