The storm came rolling down the mountain. It greeted the new year, crossed the Meridian, and hit the back of the wagon train moments before it could enter the safety of the forest. Wagons jumped into the air, donkeys brayed, men shouted. A rope snapped, a cover came loose, and a number of plain wooden chests were caught by the wind. The caravan master counted his blessings.
