An attribute determines the natural capabilities of a player character: their strength, toughness, speed, resistance to magical attacks, and so on. At the beginning, the values of these attributes are quite low, but there are many ways in which they can be increased, either permanently or temporarily. In some cases they can also be decreased.

During the game, the player can check the current values of a character's attributes on the Statistics screen.

Modifiers

At any time, attributes have two different values:

  • the unmodified value, based on natural characteristics, current equipment and possibly the modified values of other attributes. These will typically improve significantly during the game through, among other things, training, promotions, titles, skills and permanent boosts;
  • the modified value, where modifications can spring from non-permanent effects such as conditions, spells, potions and temporary boosts.

The modified values are the ones that count in the moment, for instance during combat or when a character tries to win a challenge.
