Ever heard of Theodore Sturgeon? He was an excellent SF writer, who proposed Sturgeon's Law. This states quite simply that "90% of everything is c**p." And from what I've seen, I'm not sure about the exact percentage, but he's certainly on the right lines. I must say that having seen the film of Eragon did not inspire me to read the book. |

You should read it, just to see the big difference regarding the quality film->book

OK, I'll give it a try sometime. But I doubt if a huge quality drop on going from film to book would be a surprise to anyone here. That was why I was so delighted with Peter Jackson's efforts on Lord of the Rings. Did you ever see the first attempt to film it? To say it was dire would be a gross understatement. And this has always been the case, especially with SF stories. Just before WW2, John W Campbell wrote a superb short story, called "Who Goes There?" This was turned into a film called "The Thing from Another World", (which I saw when I was still at school) which I suppose could be called an average B-movie horror flick if you were in a benevolent mood. The ingenuity, logic and deduction that were central to the original story are almost entirely missing in the film, and so is the central premise that the members of the expedition could be undetectably replaced by the aliens - at least, my mind does not contain that memory. So much so, that when I finally read the story, it never crossed my mind that this was the basis of the film. |

Yeah, don't judge Eragon by the movie. And also remember when you read it that it was written by a teenager so that you will be inspired to read the second one, which is really REALLY worth reading.

Yes, but I think it was a fine first attempt.
