There is no answer. The cave goblins keep pushing the heroes out.

Unhappy

Vori, Red Dragon Cave

The Supergubers are pushed back all the way to the edge of the cliff ...

Nicolai: "Do something! We are falling off the first page!"

Arturchix: Let`s return to Larhana!

A Lloyd`s beacon spell is cast! From there the heroes decide to explore the waters nearby again, after all, they can swim very well now!

Larhana settlement

Vilx: DaveO, have you any money left in that thin purse? Swimming skill Regran achieved is great but if he can master it - may be it will be better? As may dad loved to say - know something about everything and everything about something. Pathfinding in our case.

Vori, Larhana Settlement

Purses empty, every last superfluous item sold with just the sack of clovers and horseshoes remaining, the heroes knock on Tarsellis' door and pay the fee to make Regran a Master Pathfinder.

The ranger seems to grow ten inches. Then, concentrating hard, he spreads out both arms and a strange thing happens. Suddenly, they can see the ghostly outline of a bird sitting on his right arm. It looks like a falcon. Then, it flies up high into the sky, getting out of sight.

Arturchix: "Regran! What happened?"

The ranger seems with them again.

Regran: "I just got a peek of the landscape around us, from above. Magnificent! Come, let us go to the lake, I saw one spot this side of the landbridge where we can enter with ease."

Dragonheart: "Into the water? It's freezing cold, man! Are you nuts?"
Vilx: "It'll be fine. We have done it before."
Arturchix: "And we have a task to do. I'm sure there is something in it for us, like a reward. We desperately need one!"
Dragonheart: "Well alright then, on your say-so. Can't say I'm looking forward to it."

Vori, at the waterfall

Slowly, so they won't spook any merfolk, the heroes slide into the water. As they are swimming alongside the landbridge, the sound of the waterfall starts to fill their ears. The current is beginning to drag, when they see a figure some way ahead. It's a mermaid, and she seems to be in trouble, barely able to hold on to a rock!

by Tania Henderson

DaveO, shouting: "Come on fellows, we must help her or she will be pulled under!"
Arturchix: "But the current! It will catch us, too, if we swim up to her!"

Will the heroes put their own lives at risk to try and rescue the creature?

Swimming Supergubbers!

Regran: ... and that`s why Cron put us all togheter!

Without another word, the Outspoken calls his friends and jumps on the water, as a Master Pathfinder he can help his friends swim with ease!

The Paladin`s heart is more on it than anyone else's, so he is the first to reach the Mermaid!

DaveO: Hold on mylady, i shall help you!

Vori, the waterfall

They were never going to get there in time. The Mermaid's hands slip, and the current grabs her, pulling her towards the landbridge, then pulling her under.

It is at that time that the heroes come to realize that they may have made a mistake. DaveO is the first to go. The water takes him, too, faster and faster. The others are following close behind.

Darkness comes upon them when they are taken under the landbridge, the current ever swifter. Is that a final cry for help from the Mermaid, that they hear over the thunder of the waterfall? Or is it their own voice? Swimming is of no use anymore, the Chedians brace themselves for the long drop down into the ocean as they see dimmed light at the other side. There goes the Mermaid over the edge, only moments ahead.

* ZAP! *

A beam of raw, terrible magic hits the creature the moment she goes over. There is no time to react.

* ZAP! *

The entire party undergoes the same fate.

Now, in horror, as they are falling, the Paladin points at the ugly creature ahead and below them, where there once was a beautiful Mermaid.

Then he looks in shock at his own, outstretched arm .... as it is no different from hers.

The bottom appears to be way higher than it should have been. But no - their bodies, heavier than the merfolk, dropped onto hard rock less than halfway down. The party of newly made Qallupilluits, dizzy and bottoms aching, find themselves on a small ledge behind the veil of the waterfall! The ledge extends both west and east beyond their view.

More pain follows when their bodies fight the metamorphosis, that was not meant for them.

It is a sorry group of adventurers, wet, worn and wounded, both in body and heart, who sit on the narrow ledge, slowly coming to their senses under the roaring waterfall.

The delude and almost flooded heroes straight themselves. The ranger`s eyes try to pierce the darkness seeking any kind of strange sign or maybe an exit. The assassins bitter voice is the first to be heard.

Vilx: We are trapped and turned in to these awful beings. That`s why i ask for payment before saving ladies in danger...

Nicolai: Now we shall never get to Lord Markhan!!! And even if we do, the guards will probably shoot us before we can even talk!

Arturchix: Wait! Let`s ask the Seer if there is any solution to our current condition. Alas, s/he wanted us to inspect this place, didn`t s/he?

DaveO: Okay, hand me this mirror, please. Wise Seer! Please answer us. What has happened? Can we turn back to normal? How? And are we to follow this place to its very end before anything else?

Ahhh you must be the young group I gave the mirror to but I see that you have a spell cast upon your group. This spell should wear off in time but if it does not you must go to Seelie for help in getting it removed.
Now that you are there this entire area should be investigated and find out what happenes to the Merfolk this I need to know. You will find your new condition should not hamper you in any noticeable form that you cannot overcome. Also I notice that you have not found out what it is the the young Prince has. This must be done. May your wisdom and new gained knowledge guide you on your journey.

This answer calmed down the heroes and speccialy their two companions. However, Vilx and Regran`s eyes lock on Nicolai. Somewhat scared, he asks:

Nicolai: What is this strange look of you...
Vilx: Enough of this Nicolai. Show us every single thing that you are carrying with you. We are all fish now. Get naked.
Regran: Now we shall discover what the Seer so dearly wants!
DaveO: After this search we shall go by the East tunnel. Arturchix, some light here please!
ShaoMa: By the flaming fury of Cron: TORCH LIGHT!
Dragonheart: You are tough for sure guys. Do the young prince really need to undress himself?
Regran: He should better do this with his own hands, or our Graybearded dwarffish here will rip it out, no?
Vilx: You bet...

Vori, under the waterfall

With a hurt look on his face, the princeling throws his backpack aside and begins to undress, which is not easy in his present condition. There go his gloves, and his elven cloak. The belt is the next thing to drop onto the ground, with his short sword, a dagger and a pouch. The helmet, with some unknown insignia, follows - then his deer-leather shirt, which drops to the ground with a thud, surprisingly revealing a light, top-quality chainmail. Everything is of course soaking wet.

Matching deer-leather boots are next, with great effort, and this leaves the young prince in a tight undergown from feet to neck, except for one ring on his left hand.

Nicolai: "There! Are you satisfied?"

Actually the prince looks like he is feeling a whole lot better, and their newest companion starts to follow his example.

Dragonheart: "I think we should all undress, make a fire and dry ourselves and our belongings."

But the ranger, helped by the Torchlight, sees as good as before and spots something in the distance.

Regran: "There! It looks like some kind of a grotto or alcove not too far to the east."
Vilx: "No .... let's not get distracted again!"
Arturchix: "We must inspect Nicolai's stuff!"
DaveO: "So what are we looking at? What is out of place?"

Cave under waterfall

Vilx to prince : Nicolai, we can be allies and we can be just strangers wich paths crossed, but if you want us to risk our lives for your cause, you must trust us or further allienship will be impossible. IF Regran said all your items, it means ALL. Your ring, please. I don't like to use force if not necessary, but, believe me, I can be VERY violent. After we experienced THIS (shows his own scales) refusing isn't an option.

Vori, under the waterfall

Nicolai: "Okaaaay .... here. It's really not that special, I mean, it belonged to my grandfather. So I must have it back."

It takes a lot of effort, but finally the prince gets the ring off his finger.

The Chedians study the piece of jewelry. It looks a simple spikard of sorts, but it refutes any attempt at identification. There is a mark of a small pyramid imprinted on the inner side.

Vilx: "Nicolai, do you know what that little pyramid means?"
Nicolai: "I'm sorry, but I have no idea. I wish I knew, but I really don't. Can we please make a fire now? I am so wet and cold ..."
Dragonheart: "Say, why don't we pick everything up and move to that little grotto. It's not very comfortable here, lads."

The grotto is their next place. There they stand by a small fire, drying...

DaveO: Tell us more about your grandfather, Nicolai...

Vori, under the waterfall

Six Qallupilluit sit by the fire, trying to get dry. An unnatural thing for Qallupilluit to do, but these six are not quite normal ...

Nicolai: "My grandfather Morglin? He is the founder of the Ironfist dynasty, you know. He had to beat barbarians, warlocks and sorceresses to claim the throne! But I never met him. He was already quite old when my father was born. There are a lot of stories about him. Did you know that nobody really knows where he came from?"
Vilx: "When did you get the ring?"
Nicolai: "My father gave it to me when he left. He said I would need it some day, and he said the same about Tanir's Bell and he was right!"
Arturchix: "What is Tanir's Bell, and what did you need it for?"
Nicolai: "It was made by Tanir the wizard, when my uncle Archibald was stoned and put into the castle library, so ...."

The prince proves to be a good storyteller, and slowly the suspicion fades.

But something is bugging the ranger, and finally he can't hold it anymore.

Regran: "When are we finally going to open that chest?"

The other Qallupilluit look at the ranger's paw, then at the black chest that is all but hidden in the shadows near the back wall of the little grotto.

Vori, under the waterfall

The dragonhunter notices something ...

Dragonheart: "Strange. So far all the chests I've seen always had a little picture of the 3 EvilDOers on the lid. But this one has what looks like a rainbow mark. I wonder what it means ..."

But the chest doesn't blow up in their faces, and the Chedians are eager to see the contents. There is gold, lots of it, several thousands for sure! And what's in that wrapper?

DaveO: "A dagger! And look at all those gems, it must be an artifact! Vilx?"
Vilx: "It is! This is the 'Dagger of Many Magics' the Seer was talking about!"

Dagger of Many Magics

Attack: +9
Damage: 2d3+9, plus 5-15 points of random magic
Value: 20,000

Regran notices someting on the bottom of the chest. It's a letter!

February 16, 1163 AS

"I am putting my dagger in this chest, so that it may be of some use to the hero who finds it.
I can no longer stand being in this shape, and will give in to the inevitable fate that awaits below.
Someone else must complete my quest and save the Merfolk, before it is too late and the villagers have killed them all, not knowing what they are doing.
This is what I have found out from the runes. To lift the spell,
a child must be given to the Qallupilluit. It is the only way."

Surprised by the strange letter, the Chedians decided to continue by the eastern tunnel.
