Vori, at the Lonely Tree

Regran pulls and pulls, sweating all over and breathing heavily, but the statue will not come off the pedestal. DaveO is about to give him a hand (or two), when all of a sudden a voice comes from above their heads ...

(voice) "Must you do that?"
Regran: "Wha .... who's there?"
(voice): "Always break things of beauty?"

The adventurers look up and around, but nobody is there. Could it be that ... it IS a strange tree ...? Startled, Regran lets go of his grip.

(voice): "Right. Now don't do that again."
Arturchix: "Who are you? Are you an invisible guardian?"
(voice): "I am no more invisible than you. Can you not see my roots, my branches and my leaves?"
Nicolai: "Oh! A talking tree! I've heard of one in the Tularean Forest, they call it Tree 69 or something."
(voice): "Smart, are we? I am Tree One, or the Lonely Tree as the Snowelves say. The Faeries call me Ygg, which is more like my real name. You would not be able to say my real name, so Ygg will do."

by Mark Wasyl

Vilx: "Are you guarding this statue?"
Ygg: "Not really. Or maybe I am. The Snowelves put it here. It's a statue of The White Goblin. But my task is to mark the halfway point. These days that is right here. I always say that, haha, it's really order and chaos that move while I stay put."
Vilx: "The halfwaypoint?"
DaveO: "Who or what is The White Goblin?"
Ygg: "If those things are beyond your comprehension, I cannot tell you. Some day you may find out. For now, if you are nice, I will let you sleep at my roots."

The supergubbers lay camp and wait for the night's wind to do its work. Slowly they fall in to gracefull sleep, by the roots of the tree whose name was Yggdrasil, but to them only Ygg...

Vilx:- drowsy- DaveO, aren't you going to sleep friend? The fire is almost out.

DaveO: I want to finish only this one more recipe. It is about potatoe cheese by the Dragons Fire! Sounds interesing, if a bit dangerous.

Vilx: Aaaallllright! Good night. Zzzzzz

Mushroom Awakening

The Shaolin Master stood quietly training his moves by the morning sun, which slowly raised itself in the horizon. Suddenly...

Regran, Vilx & Nicolai: What the heck did you put in here? Pfwah... We shall get you, you slime of a cooker Paladin!

DaveO: - running from his rampaging friends - Wait! I only followed the recipe! I did not know this mushroom would do this... your tongues color shall soon return to normal! What? My eyes also? I do not expect to have their color changed...

Arturchix: At least you could run by the road, thats the way we are taking fellows!

Ygg: Funny friends you have, quiet one. Farewell!

The Shaolin Master sets his next beacon by the tree and begins to herd his friends by the path.

Vori, at the Lonely Tree

The adventurers have walked a mere ten strides east in the morning sunshine, when they bump into an invisible wall ...

Arturchix: "Ouch! Warn me the next time I want to lead."
Vilx: "What is it?"

It is the Lonely Tree that clarifies the situation.

Ygg: "Ah. You wish to cross to the Shoals, then. I can put you there, but it takes you two full days."

Vori, north from the Lonely Tree

And so it is that the Chedians head up the mountain, leaving the Shoals for later. But Nicolai was right: this is not the path to the Silver Mines, where one would expect to see signs of traffic. Instead, no-one seems to have followed this path or a long time. Loose rocks, and branches of trees hanging over the path, make the going difficult. For a while, it looks like the winding path is leading to a pass between two mountain tops, but that too isn't the case. Mist is forming higher up, and the adventurers almost fall over the edge when they suddenly come to a steep drop down.

It is not the end of the way. In fact, there are two ways: both leading further up, the one on their left back west and the other to the east. After some hesitation, they take the latter.

To their surprise, after only a few steps they are going north again, and down, leaving the mist behind. A short way - branches pushed aside - and they come to the entrance of a round cul-the-sac.

Their eyes cannot possibly miss the tall Obelisk at the far end.

Nicolai: "Wow! I have seen quite a few obelisks, but I never knew their was one on Vori! Let's see if it has an inscription. Most do, you know, it is sort of a puzzle."
Arturchix: "Let's be careful. Do you see those lines on the ground? They may be part of a magical pattern, like a pentagram but more complicated. I don't think we should step on it. I mean the lines look old, but the magic can still be there."
Regran: "I think we can go round without touching it."

Curious, they go around the magic lines, all the way to the Obelisk. The last part of the way, the young Prince runs ahead.

Nicolai: "Look! It does have an inscription!"
DaveO: "What does it say?"
Nicolai: "It's a poem ..."

Mesmerized, they stare at the text.

"Many shadows do I cast"
"Tall and proud, with sword in hand"
"Springing worlds abundant"
"True would be to break the fast"
"Salvage the good treasure banned"
"From the house redundant"

Lost in thought, but not in will the heroes return to Ygg, the Tree 1, and ask for passage to the Shoals.

Arturchix: How are you two doing, riddlemasters?

Regran: Not good, ShaoMa, it cames to my mind an strange filling about an Green Prism... by Skraelos name, how didi this image got into my mind?

DaveO: Nonsense. We are in Vori, it MUST be some kind of special cheese....

All: What?! Cheese???

DaveO: Just kidding pals, never saw a paladin with humor before?

The Shoals, at the Lonely Tree

Two days pass in a flash.

The heroes find themselves on similar ground as before. When they look up, they see a strange tree not twenty paces to the east.
It is Tree One.

Arturchix: "You have come with us?"
Ygg: "No, I stayed just where I was. It is the map that moved, not I."
Regran: "The trail up the mountain behind you, is that a different one then?"
Ygg: "It is, and it isn't. But I can tell you that Dwarves go up and down that way oftentimes, none of them willing to enter a conversation with me."
Vilx: "Where does the main road lead to?"
Nicolai: "Are we close to the sea?"
Ygg: "It leads to wherever you want to go, as do all roads. But I have seen more than my share of seagulls lately."
DaveO: "Thank you, Tree One, for your help."
Ygg: "Farewell, travellers, may you find balance on your path."

A road has to lead somewhere, even to a dead end. The Chedians walk the path intent on finding this answer.

Regran: I like this fellow, Tree One.
Vilx: Me too. It seens so certain about the world and everything else. Sounds trustworth, as trees go.
Arturchix: Remember the Green Man? It surelly was a good pal also.
DaveO: Good memories, about a past we so dearly miss.

The Shoals, to the beach

Tree One must have been telling the truth, since soon enough the squeaking of the seagulls reach the ears of the adventurers. And the road seems to be going up a dune - although with the snow covering everything, that is hard to say for sure.

They look up to eye a large swarm of the birds passing over their heads, and heed not the alert that turns yellow, then red. Then Nicolai is hit by something from behind the rise.

Nicolai: "Hey! Who is throwing snowballs at me! Are there children here?"

No, there are no children. Soon the party is hit by a barrage, and snowballs are not so funny with stones inside.
From behind the rise a single small creature appears, then five, then dozens, and they throw with improved aim now that they can see their victims. The Chedians are ambushed by Gremlins!

Arrows and one Boomerang fly and hit the pack of little monsters, but there are so many, and they move so fast.

Hurting but with confidence, Arturchix casts the spell that was so magnificent against the Minotaurs. But no chain of lightning paints the sky - the Gremlins are laughing at the Druid when his magic merely tickles them ...

DaveO: Cowards! Come and fight!
Vilx: Regran, our missiles are of no use! They are too fast.
Regran: Let's try to close in. Run!

The supergubbers charge in to the frey, bellowing at the top of their lungs, spears and blades raised to strike killing blows!

The Shoals, on the beach

The heroes storm forward and catch some of their attackers, but the bulk of them strafe to the sides and keep out of reach. There is only one thing to do.

Regran: "Keep on running! There is the sea, maybe we can find safety in the water!"

But to their great relief, the Gremlins are not following them at all, and stay on the top of the dune. Before the adventurers are at the shoreline, they are out of reach.
Still panting, they heal themselves as good as they can.

Vilx: "What now? The road has stopped."
DaveO: "Let's follow the coast. The dock can't be too far away, right?"

Looking out over the sea, the Chedians can see what looks like several islands in the distance.

After some deliberation, they start walking to the north. An excellent decision, as it turns out. Soon, the see some activity ahead, and this time it's not a pack of Gremlins.

It is, in fact, the eastern dock. And not only that: a ship is moored at it, and Nicolai identifies it as a merchant vessel. Near the dock they see crates and barrels, and people who are busy loading the cargo onto the ship. A man in his fifties, clad in wealthy merchant's clothes is overseeing the work and looks up when the adventurers approach.

Lord Markham: "Hello there! Can I help you with something?"
Nicolai: "Lord Markham, it's me, Nicolai Ironfist!"
Lord Markham: "Well, well. When I last saw you, you were just a little boy. How you have grown! And just as adventurous as your father. What brings you here?"
Nicolai: "We are on a quest, to gain the trust of the Council of Grey. It's mighty important."
Lord Markham: "If you say so. I can't say I've done much business with them."
Arturchix: "Milord, we understand that you may have the only ship around in these waters, and we are seeking passage."
Lord Markham: "As you can see I have not much room left for passengers, but King Ironfist in the past, and lately Queen Catherine have always been good customers. I'd be willing to take you to Avlee. I am dropping off cargo at an island west of the mainland there at regular intervals. The locals bring it over to the mainland. It's all to be transported to Emerald Isle from there, where I'm opening a new business. We sail at noon, to arrive in the early morning."
Vilx: "Are there any other places one can go from here?"
Lord Markham: "My ship here could go to Rigard in about the same time, but that would delay my new business. Can't do that unless you do something for me in return."
Regran: "What could we do for you, Lord Markham?"
Lord Markham: "It is well known that I've been hunting down Tatalian pirates. There is still one left, by the name of Wacko, but I really don't have the time to deal with him now. If you were to, say, sabotage his ship, the Wastrel, you'd gain me some time and I would take you to Rigard if you want."
DaveO: "Is there anything of interest here in the Shoals?"
Lord Markham: "There is the volcano on Rime Isle in the north. My ship can't get there because of all the ice floes. But I wouldn't go swimming either with all the sharks in the sea. Further, if you continue north on the beach you will of course find the Faerie Forest when you are past the mountains."

Vilx: Are there any other sites of interest to explore in this parts?

The Shoals, on the beach

Lord Markham: "There is no permanent settlement nearby. The nearest town would be Seelie, but you have to go deep into the Faerie Forest to get there. Or, if you like the mountains, you can seek out the Dwarves who are working in the Silver Mines."

The Shoals, on the beach

Lord Markham: "His ship will not be far out of the Bay of Volee, I fear. Perhaps Judge Viesis has more recent information for you, he has been sentencing the pirates I arrested."

To the old Judge!

Arturchix sacrifices Ygg's beacon slot and casts his spell to summon a beacon at Lord Markham's Outpost. Next, the powerful druid town portals all the adventurers back to Volee. Back at the Judge's house, they try to find Viesis.

DaveO: Got everything on your memory, Outspoken?
Vilx: Are you not going to forget the pirate's name?
Regran: Calm down. Judge Viesis will receive all of us. Anyway i remember its Wocky or something, huh?
Arturchix: Wacko, Wacko!

Volee, at Viesis' house

The adventurers are in luck: the old Judge is home!

Viesis: "That is so nice of you to pay me a visit. I presume you have questions?"

Regran: Hail Judge Viesis! Your honor, could you please tell us who and where this Wacko Pirate might be found?

Viesis

Viesis: "Ah, Wacko? - mutters something angrily - He is one fishy man. I used to cooperate with Lord Markham. He caught the pirates and I sentenced them. But Wacko! - shakes his head from side to side - He always slips our reach! It would be very good if you helped me to catch him."
Vilx: "Do you have any idea where might he be?"
Viesis: "Hmm... He is always on board of his ship. I heard some rumours there is a ship in the bay south of the city. Why don't you check it? But I would advise stealth rather than raw speed. Perhaps you can reach the ship by swimming from the other side of the bay? That might be benefical, there would be smaller chance for them to spot you."
Regran: "Thank you, we'll do our best."

As the party prepares to leave Viesis' house, he gives the party one more warning.

Viesis: "But be cautious, Wacko will probably try to get you by his side. Don't listen to him. He will likely betray you when you least expect it. - then he thinks for a while and smiles, as if a good idea has struck him - Hey, perhaps you SHOULD pretend you cooperate with him, that way we could catch him in the act!"
