Vori, Yanmir's Fort

Regran: .... it's a Frost Giant alright. And he scans exactly the same as Yanmir did when we tackled him. Very tough! But how can he be back?

Giant Talk

The giant stood wainting. No one dare make a hasty move.

Arturchix: Lets see if there is any danger nearby, i call the Eye of the Wizards!

Vilx: (shouting) Who are you giant?

Vori, Yanmir's Fort

He speaks!

Yanmir Hooommm, hummmm! I am Yanmir, of course! You go live in a corner of the world and still the mortals keep pooring in ..... Not nicely by the door, either. I saw you arriving through the Gap, that hasn't been done by your kind for ages. Involved in the affairs of higher beings, are we? Someone must be making a great effort to have this happen. Not that I care much, I don't meddle with current policies anymore. I rather keep myself busy with my Pet project.
Arturchix: Your pet project, great lord?
Yanmir: Interested in my Pet project, yes? Good. Very good. I might get to like you a bit, you don't look like those pesky Barbarians to me. I am creating some pets for my daughter Atali. I call them Yeti's, maybe you have seen one or two around. Don't provoke them, they may be a little, eh, dangerous to you little folk.
Jermy: Can we have a look around then, please?
Yanmir: Why, sure, just be careful like I said. Not that there is much to see, I keep a clean house. But don't you want to see the one who is waiting outside?
Regran: Is there someone waiting for us, Lord?
Yanmir: A young lad, it seems. Has been camping just outside my front door for several days now. Say, when you go outside, will you do me a little favor?
Vilx: Name it, mighty giant.
Yanmir: If you see my daughter, will you tell her to come home? She has been out for a while now. If you do that for me, I'll owe you a favor in return.
Regran: We will find your daughter Atali for you.

You should have known better than to converse with someone like Yanmir. Not only did you get side-tracked, but now you have a chore to do, too! And you have more questions than before you spoke. Who could be waiting for you, in a land you have never been to before? And having Yanmir owing you a favor sounds a little out of your league.

Strangeness

The new Yanmir did not show any sign of knowing the heroes who have killed him(?) in the past. Now they decide to walk out of the halls and explore the sorrouding lands. Striding to exit they have a friendely conversation.

Jermy: Hey Vilx, let this chest in peace, for the Gods sake!

Vilx: What are you talking about? I was just checking if this Yanmir was as careful with his belongs as the other...

Regran: Quite funny my good friend. I am more interested in seeing the giant's daughter. Imagine: a gigantic (and hopefully) gorgeus lady for us to guide...

Arturchix: Are you people daydreaming or what? I shall do something usefull while we walk. Wise Lloyd, let this beacon our way to return here!

Vori, Yanmir's Fort

On your way to the front exit, you pass what clearly looks like a girl's bedroom. It has a normal-sized bed, a mirror and several chests and cabinets. In a nearby hallway, you notice two frolicing Yeti pups. When you set your Beacon, it hits you that all your slots were empty .....

The front exit is a normal door, not the portal you had expected, and when it opens, you set foot on the white snow of an unknown world.

There you are greeted in a familiar voice. At first, you don't recognize who it is. He looks so much younger, and handsome, noble even in his perfect traveler's outfit. But you know better.

Nicolai: "Greetings, adventurers! Are you the ones I have been expecting? My name is Nicolai Ironfist, Prince of Enroth, son of King Roland and Queen Catherine. I am on an important mission. There should be a token in your possession if you are really the ones. I think you are, as today is indeed the summer solstice. I barely made it in time, you know, coming from so far.
Please, tell me your names, and if you have such a token produce it forthwith."

Nicolai the Clown to Nicolai the Prince

Land where there was none before. Prince were once there was an madman. Are the supergubbers prepared?

Jermy: Here is your letter, Prince Nicolai.

Arturchix: Are you the same one who talked to us before?

Vilx: Do not forget to ask about our needs. Armor, gold, etc...

Regran: Prince, have you seen an giant's daughter around? And if, positive, is she gorgeus or not?

Vori, at Yanmir's Fortress

Nicolai: "My letter! Jermy, I was wondering what had happened to it. Now I am certain that you are the ones. This must be the token, I am so excited!
Arturchix, is it? I'm not sure I understand. I haven't seen any of you before.
Vilx, I didn't expect you to come this empty-handed, but I have some gold with me. When we go into town, I can do some shopping, but don't expect too much.
I have not seen any beautiful girls in this neighbourhood, Regran. I've scouted a bit though. From here, there is a path to the east that looks dangerous. I've spotted a campfire in the distance, but didn't want to go near to check it out. The trail to the west, that bends north, goes all the way 'round the fort, I assume. There can't be much there, this being the far north-west corner of the island. Not a good idea to walk it if you are alone. One wrong step and you fall into the ocean below!
The road to the south is from where I came, it gets better further on.

Now, let me tell you about our mission. Since you've already read my letter, you know that my world is in danger. A terrible horror has been unleashed, and only the old magic of Vori can save us. The Seers have given ME the important task of finding this old magic. But there was also the Prophecy, that said that no-one from my world could make it happen, that we had to rely on outsiders. And you are they. You must help me, because when this world is lost to the devils it will not be the last.

I have only a little more information about Vori than you have. The Snowelves live here, and it's a harsh climate as you can feel, with many dangers. There is the capital of Volee and there are some small villages. Some time ago they had a war with the Minotaurs. Everyone knows that. And they say that the Tatalian pirates are still active, raiding the coastal areas as they do elsewhere. Lord Markham is hunting them all down. He is definitely one to ask for guidance in our quest, Lord Markham I mean, but I think we should speak with everyone in a position of authority.

Nicolai has joined your party - again. Can it get any weirder? Is he to be trusted? Do you even have a choice? Should you do as he says, find Lord Markham and other authority figures? He seems to be as much an outsider in this part of his world as you are. And how accurate was this boy's scouting? He doesn't sound very brave. But he seems to have come a long way already, maybe he is just careful.

Note: Nicolai has just told you something about the
geography. It might be a good idea to make a map.

Lord Markham, Roland Ironfist, Tatalians... many peoples form this strange land. The landscape was pleasing to Chedians, remembering cold Lindisfarne. Land, however, is also composed of it's people.

Arturchix: Nicolai, who is this Roland Ironfist? And Lord Markhan? Are they jarls?

Jermy: Do you remember what you said to us about our Writ of Fate?

Nicolai heard wth caution. While these three talked, the assassin and the ranger noticed something.

Regran: How about going to that campside, Vilx? We arlready saw that this Princling is somewhat of a coward...

Vilx: Agreed. But caution with your word Regran, he seens differrent. Anyway the camp is a good idea, let's talk to the others.

Vori, east from Yanmir's Fort

While the adventurers are following the path to the east, the Prince responds.

Nicolai: "Jarls? What are jarls? Roland Ironfist, my father, is the King of Enroth. But we cannot go there, we have a job to do and besides, he is not home either.
Lord Markham is a wealthy merchant. He has a manor in Tatalia, but he spends lots of time on the seas. I really hope we can find him on Vori, he has often done business with my father and he could be a lot of help to us.
I know nothing about any Writ of Fate. How could I have said something about it? I don't think I've ever seen you before, I really don't. Unless you were in the crowd in Terrax, but I don't remember you."

The path bends slightly north, then due east again. Pine trees are growing on both sides, becoming a dark forest that seems impenetrable. You can hear tweeting, howling and shuffling, but nothing emerges from the trees.
After rounding the second bend, you see a campfire in the distance. Curious, you go on, and your gem turns yellow ...

Staying close to the trees, you remain out of sight for the moment. Soon enough, you can see that a good number of people is at the camp, which appears to be in a cul-the-sac, surrounded by higher ground; the path goes no futher. They all look rather savage. When you scan them, you recognize them as Barbarians. There are plain Barbarians, some Barbarian Thieves and a couple of Barbarian Mages. A few are standing on a rock, possibly overlooking the ocean below.

On what seems an improvised throne sits the most savage of the lot: the Barbarian Leader. A single female Barbarian is standing beside him.
Then you notice a wooden cage behind these two, strengthened with iron. Someone or something is locked inside, you cannot recognize any features.
The scene is completed with a cookpot over the fire and two chests.

Barbarians

Violent men, clad in wolf-skins. Truly this land is a lot like Chedian. Maybe thats the motive why the supergubbers were chosen after all.

Regran: Nicolai, who are those people?

Near the Barbarian Camp

Nicolai: "Why, those are barbarians, worshippers of Krohn. Anyone can see that! I don't think they will attack you, the way you look they'll just laugh, but you shouldn't do anything foolish like opening those chests."

When you scan the Barbarians more accurately, you see that the ordinary ones have 200 HP, the Mages 300 and the Thieves 400, all with high resistances to both magic and physical attacks. The leader and the female don't scan right, you get no information at all. Maybe you should find an excuse to introduce yourselves.

Danger! Danger! Could be danger!

The Supergubbers have no fear. They walk into the barbarians view, expecting their reaction.

Arturchix: As the Shaolin Master, you can count on me if trouble arrives!

Vilx: Surely we do.

Regran: I shall go beside you Arturchix, they will not hit me that easy!

Jermy: I miss a good sword, my turtle armor, good times...

Barbarian Camp

As soon as the adventurers show themselves, everyone looks at them in wonder. When they approach the Leader, it is the woman who takes two steps towards them and speaks. She introduces herself as Kija, a female Barbarian Thief.
Meanwhile, Nicolai hides behind his companions. Arturchix gets pushed in front.

Kija: "You look lost. What are you doing in these parts, and not well clad either I might add?"
Arturchix (blushing): "Eh, Oh. Milady. We saw the fire and thought maybe you could help us. We are on a small errant. Nothing important to bother your leader with."

The Barbarians come closer, until they almost form a circle around the party.

Kija: "Yes?"
Arturchix: "Oh, sorry. It was Yanmir the Frost Giant. He asked us to find his daughter and tell her to come home. Her name is Atali."
Vilx: "Also please, if you could direct us to the nearest town."

Now you've done it. The Barbarian Leader stands up from his seat and approaches. He is Conan, the Holy Barbarian.

Conan (pointing at the cage): "As you can see, Yanmir's daughter is unavailable at the moment, unless you want to do something about it?"
Jermy (very small voice): "Do? We can't do anything."
Conan: "That is right, laddy. She is not going anywhere until we get some answers."
Regran: "Answers, Sir?"
Conan: "Well, yes. We have been praying to Krohn as always but he has not heard us for ages. We want Yanmir to tell us what has happened. Are the Gods at war again, or what? If he tells us, I'm sure that his daughter will, er, be available again.
But of course if you had something worthwhile to trade for her, that would be another story."
Vilx (looking in vain for Nicolai): "Something of value, Sir Conan?"
Kija: "We would be willing to trade her in for a couple of Dragon eggs. It should be their breeding season soon."
Arturchix: "Ah, Dragon eggs. We could try and find some for you ...."

The party makes a hasty retreat.

On the way...

Atali kidnaped by barbarians??? The four Chedians know better than to fight unprepared, now they head south, by the road Prince Nicolai said to be safe.

Regran: I wish i could have seen her face...

Vilx: Stop it, Regran! You are sighing for an giantess that you do not even know?

Regran: Its my crusader's heart, cold friend. I do not like having to make ladies wait for the rescue.

Jermy: I understand, but there is no need for US to hear your complainings!

Regran: I am not complaining, it is just that we have been traveling for so much time. No stop. No socializing. The greatest talk we have till now was: "Hey you! Die scoundrel! I do not care that you are a god!"

Arturchix: ---meditating--- Krohn, give me pacience. I shall try to create an Town Portal, okay...

And so the long way kept going on and on.

On the road south from Yanmir's Fort

The sun is shining, the pine forest looks lovely, and everyone is happy that they got away clean from the encounter with the Barbarians. The road bends slightly to the east, and the sounds of seabirds get weaker and then no longer reach their ears.
Nicolai tells the party that the settlement they're heading for is called Larhana. Only Snowelves live there, and they are a friendly bunch, minding their own business.

Supper (berries, mostly, and some roots that Nicolai pointed out) was late, but the sun is still shining as they go for the final stretch to the village.

Then all of a sudden you hear a loud noise of breaking branches and when you look ahead, they see a large furry animal blocking their path, growling a ferocious challenge! And you were so close to civilization ....

When scanning the creature, you recognize it as a Poohbear. It has 500 HP and strong physical attack and defence, but lacking any magical qualities. Clearly, this is one of nature's finest.

Poor Poohbear

I simple bear would be no match, even for so silly clad heroes!

Regran: May the might of Krohn bless us all!

Vilx: Hurry, to the bear! Any hostile move and lets chop it to pieces.

Arturchix: I would rather, clobber it!

Jermy: Less talk! Move, move.

Vori, at Larhana

Finally, a good old-fashioned rumble.

When the adventurers, having prepared their spells, shout their battle cries, the Poohbear charges! Arturchix, Shaolin Master, is magnificent, landing many blows and kicks in rapid succession.
The others do what they can with their wooden swords, and soon the bear is fighting for its life. Even Nicolai participates in the action: he has produced a short blade and is fencing with the air.

Then, from out of nowhere, something heavy runs into the back of the group. Nicolai is knocked out cold, his nice outfit in tatters. Vilx is badly struck and bumps into Arturchix, who falls to the ground. When the others turn to face the new threat, they see that a second Poohbear has joined the fight! Suddenly the group is in real danger.

The new Poohbear, now standing on its hind legs, is getting ready to claw at Jermy, when the party hears a 'zongggh!' and its movement is halted in mid-air. Three feathered arrows are protruding from its chest, then six. While the creature is still staggering, a mighty axe finishes the job.

Soon, both bears lay dead on the path. Nicolai is revived, healing spells are cast, and you look up to meet your rescuer. Breathless.

Before you is a Snowelf lady, not like any Elf you've seen before. Rather than her pointy ears, it is her graceful, yet powerful movement that impresses you most. With her entirely silver appearance - armor, weapons, hair and eyes alike - and only some bone jewelry, she seems young, but so very capable.
This is the pure thing. She introduces herself as Deedlit.

courtesy of Christa Bowles

Deedlit: "The Poohbear is known to work in pairs. You were very lucky that I was just returning from my hunt. Come, let's bring these two to the village. There you can stay the night at Penno's, and in the morning you can do some shopping for better equipment."

Exactly what she was hunting, remains unclear, as you do not see any throphy besides the two bears. But you are eagerly following. Already you had noticed that near the village, the snow is gone, and the pines have made room for other foliage of a softer climate. Yet, you are certain that you are still in the far north.

Shortly before the village's entrance there is a crossing. Your companion explains.

Deedlit: "The road to the west goes to our fishing spot. East is where you do not want to go. There lies the Forest of No Return."

Larhana appears to consist of a fair number of wooden lodges, circled around the inn and a few shops that are now closed, since it is well after eight in te evening. Near the inn there is a small fountain. An opening east in the circle of dwellings leads to a pond, fed by a hot spring. Some Snowelf children are bathing in the water. At the other side of the pond, you can just see the beginning of a mountain trail.
The main road continues to the south, beyond the village.

At the inn, you are heartily greeted by Penno himself, and his wife Karya. You are sleepy, and because of all the healing many of your spellpoints are gone.

Vori, Larhana settlement

Right after breakfast, the adventures are taking a visit at the shops. There are two: one is called Ochi's Roadwear, the other Mizumo's Tomes. You are looking to see Deedlit, but apparently she has gone out already.

Nicolai has produced a stash of 2500 gold, and you are looking at the available goods. At least there is plenty of stock.

Ochi's, leaving out the fancier stuff he keeps in the back, has:
Bows, crudes at 200 or Elfwood at 400 gold a piece;
Daggers, 150 gold and better ones at 250 gold;
Armor, leather at 200 gold, or studded at 400; chain costs 600
Blades, crudes for 100 gold, silver at 300;
Helmets, leather for 50 gold, silver 250;
Boots, leather for 50 gold, silver 250;
Gloves, leather for 50 gold, silver 150;
Cloaks, leather ones at 100 gold, or fine, green Elven ones at 500.
There are also axes and a lot of spears, but no throwing weapon of any kind.

Mizumo's shows you several Spellbooks that you do not recognize. They are called: Blind, Tag, Fog and Dark Lantern! All rather expensive, and Mizumo himself says that they would do you no good unless you first aquire the Grey Magic skill, whatever that is.
But he is willing to sell you some scrolls so you can try these spells out, these go at 50, 75, 100 and 125 gold respectively.
Further, he sells all the basic potions for 10 gold and has plenty of each. You ask for skillbooks, but he looks at you funny like he's never heard of those.

When you go back to take a drink at the tavern, still undecided what to buy and where to go next, you are surprised to see another human there. Clearly a seasoned veteran of sorts, a firm man going by the name of Dragonheart. It is only polite that you enter a conversation with him.

Dragonheart: "My, my, what have we here. If I hadn't heard about your brave fight with the Poohbears, I would of said that you seemed, er, out of place in this wilderness."
Regran: "We have gone through worse before."
Jermy: "And we are just going to do some shopping for better stuff."
Vilx: "What are you doing here, anyway?"
Dragonheart: "Come, no need to be all defensive. Here, let me pay for your drinks. I am a Dragon hunter, There are quite a few of those in these parts, usually in caves on the coast, and they bring in good money if you sell the claws and teeth in Volee. If you ever want to go Dragon hunting, I could teach you the ropes. That is, if you can pay my fee, haha."
Arturchix: "You ask a fee?"
Dragonheart: "That'd be 5000 gold a week. Of course you could always start with something simpler."

The old man points out a poster on the wall, that reads:

"A promise is a promise. A 500 gold for every Qallupilluit skull."

But Nicolai reminds them that they have a quest to do. He is real eager to find Lord Markham and maybe other people of importance, which this village is lacking.

Dragonheart, obviously overhearing: "If you don't know what to do, you can always go looking for the Seer, who lives up in the mountain east of the village. Could be fun."
